We absolutely LOVE it when clients take time to offer us feedback on their experiences at Michael's. Good or bad, we want to know what you think (of course we love the good, but if we can make your experience better in some way, please let us know). On the left side of Michael's website is a 'Share your experience' box that goes to our general manager. It's like having her direct phone extension.

Here is a recent comment from an out-of-town visitor:
Not from Dayton, but was there this weekend and decided, on a whim, that I wanted a haircut...called in to make an appt and said that my only requirement was awesome bangs.  I was scheduled w/ Tasha and I can honestly say I don't think I've had a better haircut ever before.  My bangs were spot on and she was incredibly friendly and down to earth...seriously bummed that I live 2 hours away!!

Tasha

Great job Tasha! And thank you to our commenter for leaving us feedback! Have any of you readers been in the salon lately? How was your experience? Let us know - leave a comment here, or send us a message on our website, Michael's Facebook page, or Michael's on Twitter. We'd LOVE to hear from you.

We love it when our clients take the time to offer us feedback! Here is another comment that was submitted yesterday in the 'Share your experience' box on our website:
"I had a great experience. I cut 11 inches off to donate to locks of love. I was a little nervous but Myka did such a great job. I get compliments every day on my cut and color. Everything was great and I love my new do for summer!
-Kristyn

Myka

Thanks Kristyn for leaving feedback, we're so glad that Myka took such great care of you! And thanks for donating your hair to such a great cause. We work with both Locks of Love and Pink Heart Funds to donate hair to disadvantaged children and cancer patients.

In order to donate to either charity, please remember that your PONYTAIL must be at least ten inches long. Your hair might be ten inches, but when pulled back into a ponytail it gets shorter.

Has anyone else donated to Locks of Love, Pink Heart Funds or another charity? How was your experience? Did you like going from long to short? Please share in the comments below.

We've had a lot of questions from clients asking about Axxium manicures. We have written blogs about it, but we thought the best way to explain it would be to show you in a video!

Here is a video featuring Samantha, one of our newest nail technicians, demonstrating the Axxium manicure:

Some key points from the video:
  • Plan an hour for this manicure - the process is the same as our regular half-hour manicure, but the polish application takes extra time
  • Each coat of polish is cured under a UV light - drying the polish instantly
  • At present, Michael's has 14 colors to choose from for an Axxium manicure, as the service becomes more popular, we (and OPI) keep adding more
  • Removal of the Axxium gel lacquer polish doesn't damage your nails like other nail enhancements
  • Axxium is available for pedicures also!
Have you tried the Axxium manicure? What do you think?

Yesterday Michael's Salon had the pleasure of spending the afternoon with Jenny and Emily, co-bloggers at Mommin' It Up for a spa day filled with relaxation as they prepared to head to Blissdom in Nashville. On their blog, Jenny and Emily write about fashion, family and fun stuff that I think all women can relate to.

Emily and Jenny both wrote wonderful reviews of their spa day, which we can't thank them enough for. Emily's review is here on momminitup, and Jenny is a style and beauty editor at Blissfully Domestic, where she posted her review.

We want to recognize our staff members who took such great care of Emily and Jenny yesterday: Jill (facial), Pat (massage), Laura and Katie (hair), Alaina and Samantha (mani/pedi), and Debbie (makeup), along with Mieke and the other girls up front who helped guide them through their day.

Thanks Emily and Jenny for your very kind words, and we hope to see you guys back here soon!

Congrats to the MIX 1077’s morning show hosts Jeff, Kristi & Dave for winning Dayton’s CW’s ‘Life Unexpected’ DJ contest. Jeff Stevens, Kristi Leigh and Dave Alexander won the opportunity to have walk-on roles the show. Our favorite morning show hosts won the contest because more listeners cast their votes for them in CW’s online contest – beating out larger markets in 46 cities. GO Dayton!

At Michael’s Salon and Spa, we are so proud of Jeff, Kristi & Dave that we wanted to offer our services to them so they would look awesome for their big TV appearance. Kristi took us up on our offer and enjoyed a fun day of getting pretty. She started her visit at Michael’s in the spa. After picking the perfect shade of red for her finger and toes, she enjoyed a relaxing manicure and pedicure with nail technician Samantha Schuh. Next, she was off to meet with hair designer Abby Norbeck for color, cut and style. Abby worked with Kristi to select a hair color that work well with her skin tone and eyes. She then cut and styled Kristi’s hair in long layers to add texture and volume. Kristi loved her new do and looks amazing!

Check out the photos of Kristi and her day at Michael’s Salon and Spa.

Michael's Salon worked with the Media Group at Michael's to develop an intensive, hour-long training video to address the problem of choppy, uneven bobs that Michael noticed everywhere on the street. The bob is currently one of the most popular haircuts, and Michael saw a need to develop this revolutionary cutting technique. Continuing education for all designers is at every level is a large part of why Michael's is the premiere salon in the Dayton region. Michael has used this video to train his staff in small groups and has noticed a vast improvement in cuts leaving the salon. "There is no excuse for not achieving the client's desired look. You have to take into consideration the texture and type of hair, thickness, etc. in order to make this or any look work." In this training video, Michael explains how using the right products allows you to overcome difficult or hard to manage hair.

For more information on this revolutionary training video please email kim@mediagrouponline.com or call 435-5478 ext. 200.

The December 2009 issue of O, The Oprah Magazine included The O Guide to Hair Extensions, which featured Great Lengths extensions. Michael's Salon is proud to offer Great Lengths extensions to the Dayton, Ohio community. These extensions are ideal for women with fine or thinning hair, or anyone who wants a drastic change without waiting for their natural hair to grow.

The article does a great job explaining exactly what the extensions are:
"Each one comes as a 100-strand lock of human hair secured at the top with a keratin protein polymer cap. In the salon, each cap is bonded to your own hair, near the scalp, with a tonglike tool. Depending on the length and thickness of your hair, you'll need 50 to 100 pieces."
Michael's offers Great Lengths extensions only after a designer consultation. At this free consultation, your designer will estimate how long the service will take and how much it will cost (based on the volume and thickness or your natural hair), and she will give you advice on how to maintain your extensions to keep them looking healthy.

Here are some maintenance tips offered in O:
  • "Shampoo and condition with silicone-free products, because silicone can make extensions slip off"
  • "Deep-condition the ends, but avoid getting conditioner on the bonds."
  • "Extensions tangle easily; brush them gently at least twice a day with a boar-bristle paddle brush"
If you're interested in Great Lengths extensions, call us to schedule your free consultation!

As we announced last week, Michael's Salon is the Official Salon of the University of Dayton Cheerleaders:

The Flyers had their home opener vs. Creighton last Saturday, and what an exciting game it was! The cheerleaders led the crowd through a close game, and the Flyers came out on top. If you've never been to a UD Basketball game, it's hard to describe the atmosphere in UD Arena - it's electric! The fans are so supportive and into the game, the pep band is excited as they dance and play, and the cheerleaders are tumbling, stunting and cheering non-stop!

Michael's Salon and Spa is proud to support the UD Cheerleaders and to be a part of this awesome University of Dayton community!

As the premiere hair salon in Dayton Ohio, Michael's Salon is dedicated to continuing education for all designers. In October Michael took his Retail Team to New York City for the annual Intercoiffure Fall Altelier, where they were able to learn new hair trends and styles from the best of the best. Allison, Kristen, Megan, Michelle, and Nikki were impressed and almost overwhelmed by everything they learned over the weekend.

Michael's is proud to be a member of Intercoiffure, which is an exclusive international organization for the best salons and hair stylists. Michael Schuh Jr., owner of Michael's Salon and Spa, has been a member since 1978, and Master Designer Jodi Schuh has been a member since 1993.

Below is a slideshow of photographs taken by the Retail Team with pictures of them seeing the sights in New York, along with photos of daring hairstyles presented at the show. In addition, there are photographs by Rob Brinson featuring Scott Cole's collection "Post-Modern Jazz." Music by Jay Z feat. Alicia Keys "Empire State of Mind."

With the cold weather already here and winter fast approaching, the estheticians at Michael’s Salon and Spa want to remind you that winter requires some extra TLC for your skin. The dry air combined with indoor heat can wreak havoc on your skin. Here are some products available at Michael’s to help you combat cold weather dry skin:

For your face:
• MD Skincare’s Alpha Beta Daily Face Peel is a very popular product at Michael’s. It instantly helps firm skin and eliminate dullness. The daily peel helps treat enlarged pores and gently calms redness with soothing botanicals. It’s a great way to begin your skincare routine each morning – and it’s an easy 2-step process. Follow up with a moisturizer from MD Skincare’s Hydra-Pure line.

For your body:
• If your skin is already dry, exfoliating is important to remove flaky skin. Skin, An Apothecary has a line of Sugar and Salt Scrubs that will moisturize your skin while getting rid of unsightly flakes. It comes in a variety of scents and is made from all-natural ingredients. You’ll also be supporting a local business because Skin, An Apothecary is located here in Dayton, Ohio. After exfoliating, the Soy Body Whip is a fluffy body cream that gives dry dull skin a hydrated glow. It blends Vitamin C, soy and coconut oils to restore a healthy moisture balance in your skin.

For your hands:
• Dermalogica’s Multivitamin Hand and Nail Treatment is great for keeping your hands soft through the winter. It is an intense, non-greasy treatment that conditions dry, rough hands while helping to reduce nail splitting and peeling. Pro-Vitamin B5, soothing algae extract, licorice extract, Vitamins C, A and E, ginkgo biloba, and grape seed all combine in this improved formula to make your hands silky smooth!

For your feet:
• Don’t forget about your feet just because you’re not wearing sandals! Try Cucumber Heel Therapy by Creative Spa to combat dry calloused heels. You might need to use a foot file first, and then generously apply the cucumber lotion. For extra relief, apply at bedtime and slip on cotton socks.

For your skin:
• Want to keep your summer glow all year long? Norvell Amber Sun’s Sunless Mousse delivers naturally dark color in a foaming, bronzing formula that is easy to use and won’t leave streaks! Afraid to do-it-yourself? Michael’s offers spray tanning by Norvell.

Just remember that the most important thing for your skin in cold weather is to moisturize, moisturize, moisturize! It is easier to prevent dry skin than to treat skin that is dry, cracked or calloused.

For more information on the products mentioned, come in to Michael’s Salon and Spa. We’re open Mon-Fri 8-8, Sat 9-4, and Sun 12-6.

Hair designer, Alecia colored Stacy’s hair, using a double-process to achieve the two-toned look. Michael cut Stacy’s hair into a swingline bob using thinning shears. In cutting this type of bob, Michael stresses the importance of cutting the design line from short to long, starting in the center of the back of the head, and working around to the front. Also, when tapering the hair with thinning shears, you want to take the bulk out of the hair at the nape. The sides should be pinned out of the way because the hairline at the ear is shorter than the back, and there is less hair here. To style this trendy do, Michael used a combination of elixir and gel. He then finger dried Stacy’s hair to lift hair away from the scalp. Once her hair was about 50% dry, he used a Denman brush to straighten hair at the roots brushing the hair from the roots from one side to the other. To complete the style, Michael used a round brush bending the hair into a full bob shape and used a finishing spray to hold the look. I highlighted Nicole’s hair really heavy on top in the shape of an hour glass. For contrast, I used a rich dark chocolate color everywhere else. Nicole wanted a fun haircut that would be easy to style, so we decided on a really cute swingline bob with lots of choppy layers. The color and style look great on Nicole.

Now I have hope!

Shirley Before Laser Enhancement

Shirley After Laser Enhancement

If laser hair therapy can do this for Shirley in just 6 months, just think what it can do for you. It is a safe, effective treatment that is painless, has absolutely no side effects and is completely noninvasive. It uses a non-thermal (cool) laser in low level to bathe the scalp and hair in a pure therapeutic red light.

Having to deal with fine thinning hair for too many years myself, I can’t tell you how excited I am about this service being offered at Michael’s Salon. Being a woman who works in a salon and loves everything about the beauty industry, loosing my hair was extremely emotional and hard to accept. I just started the laser therapy last week – it’s really simple and relaxing, you just sit under the laser hood for 30 minutes two times a week. The program involves six to twelve months of treatments. To enhance the results, I apply a topical supplement in the areas where I’m experiencing the most hair loss.  I do this every night and wash my hair in the morning. The only hard part in the program is being patient and letting the system work. After seeing the results in Shirley’s pictures above, I’m so anxious to see how the program will work for me.

This is me before Laser Hair Therapy. I’ll keep you posted on my results.

FYI, for those of you who haven’t heard about Laser Hair Enhancement - It uses the most scientifically advanced cosmetic lasers, fully FDA compliant. Over 50 laser diodes bathe your scalp and hair in therapeutic light. The most effective treatment ever discovered to create a fuller, thicker, healthier head of hair.

It’s like physical therapy for your hair!
