We love it when our clients take the time to offer us feedback! Here is a comment that was submitted yesterday in the 'Share your experience' box on our website:
"This was my second time having Brooke cut, color, and style my hair. The first time I came with three different ideas that she morphed into one hair-style. I have received so many compliments from friends, family, co-workers, and fellow students. Coming back I wanted to get relatively the same hair-style and she did an equally amazing job, and I think I like it even better than the first time.

Her talent as a stylist is complimented with great customer service and conversation. Sitting in her chair feels like I am talking with an old friend.  Great service and even better hair!!  Thanks!!"

Brooke took a photo of Holly's cut and color. Brooke used a chocolate brown hair color on Holly's bottom layers and around her face, and lightened up the top layers with blonde highlights for spring. Holly's cut is an a-line bob, which is a very current look, and it's flattering on most face shapes. For styling tips, check out this recent How to video featuring Katie round brushing her a-line bob.

You've been hearing about the "Bronde" hair color trend for awhile now in the big publications (Glamour, Cosmo, Stylelist, etc.) - think Jennifer Aniston, Gisele Bündchen and 90% of Victoria's Secret models - but do you know the best way to get the look?

Balayage is the highlighting technique used to "paint" on highlights to achieve the natural-looking, sun-kissed highlights of the bronde look. Michael's designers studied this technique from the masters at Jacques Dessange in Paris and brought it back here to Dayton to train the rest of Michael's talented stylists.

We love the balayage hair color technique because it's a natural-looking alternative to traditional foil highlights. The stylist has complete control of the placement and intensity of the highlights.

What do you think of the bronde look? Is balayage a highlight technique you would like to try?

Once again, Michael's Salon was on a quest to beautify the people in the Dayton area. This time, we were looking for teachers who were ready to make a major change to their appearance. Teachers could either nominate themselves or someone else. The winners not only got their hair cut, colored, processed and styled by our hair designers, but our makeup artists were overseen by one of the top makeup artists in the country! Below are the two winners and their before & after photos!

The first winner was Caron Barks. Because of her busy schedule she could not seem to find time for herself. She found this as a great opportunity to make a change and nominated herself for the teacher make-over.

"I have been wanting to make a major change for a long time."

Ruth Sutton was the second winner. She is a regular at Michael's Salon and has been going to Sheena for over four years. After seeing the advertisement for the make-over, she nominated herself because she noticed she was in need of a change.

" I trust Sheena, and I knew she would take care of and understand the challenges I have with my hair."

Michael has been a member of Intercoiffure Mondial since 1972. Intercoiffure is an elite organization of the top hair salons and designers from around the world. Every fall the US/Canada group hosts the Fall Atelier in New York City. This year, Jodi Schuh-Keeley participated as part of the ICA Haircolor Council.

ICA Haircolor Council

The mission of the ICA Haircolor Council is to unite and raise the profile of color specialists of all levels through a network of creative energy, supported by the highest level of pure education and best practices. The group was created in 2007 by the Lois Christie, president of Intercoiffure America/Canada. " I saw a need for a forum uniting colorists throughout the industry - a forum that will help to identify and train the next generation of talented color artists."

The theme for the presentation was Soft and Strong Hair Color. Jodi designed her look with strong pieces of red and copper to accent the soft medium brown - auburn base color.

Continuing Education at Michael's Salon and Spa
Continuing education is a large part of what sets Michael's apart from the competition. While Jodi was teaching in New York, she was also taking notes and learning other trends in hair design to bring back to Michael's team here in Dayton. Esthetician Jill Luttrell also went to New York, where she visited several top-of-the-line spas to stay on top of the latest trends in skincare.

More pictures from the Intercoiffure Fall Atelier and Jodi and Jill's trip to NYC are posted in an album on Michael's Facebook Page.

What do you think of the hair styles at the show?

Model: Karin Lauterbach
Hair: Dennis Milburn
Makeup: Paula Piersall

Karin just turned 40 and was ready for a change. Dennis got to work first by giving Karin a Keratin Complex smoothing treatment. This treatment made Karin's hair smoother and took away the frizz. Karin was surprised that she "can still wear it curly," unlike many traditional relaxers.

Next, Dennis added permanent color to lighten Karin's natural tones and added subtle highlights. He cut her hair to shoulder length and softened her look with face-framing layers.

To style, Dennis used Fortifying Ultra Gel by Aquage, then blew it dry with a round brush to add lift and volume. He used Working Spray to hold Karin's style. Dennis warned Karin not to use a flat iron to straighten her hair - "you'll lose all of your volume."

Model: Ellen Arnette
Hair: Allison Kirkwood
Makeup: Paula Piersall

"I am nominating my mother, Ellen Arnette for your makeover contest. My mother has always been such a giver and doer for others that she rarely puts any time or money into herself. My mother is at a very rough time in her life. In September 2009, she lost her best friend of 30 years to cancer. And then only a few short months later - 6 days before Christmas - my Dad passed away after 30 years of marriage.

I believe that this makeover would make her feel better about herself and the future... my mother is a very strong woman. She has always been there for everyone. She would take the shirt off her back for anyone, even a stranger.

It would not only mean the world to her, but for me to see my mother smile again would be the greatest joy. My mother has had the same look my whole life, and now is the time for a change."

Change is exactly what Allison did for Ellen. She used a rich base color to add warm undertones to Ellen's hair color. Then she wanted to break it up wiht some light by adding caramel and blonde highlights. Allison kept the look natural - the highlights are subtle so you can see the darker color underneath.

Ellen has very fine thin hair, so Allison cut four inches from the length and gave her medium to long layers to add volume. She added side-swept bangs and layers around Ellen's face to soften the look.

Allison suggests for Ellen to blow-dry her hair upside down at home, then use a round brush to shape the style. After blow-drying, Allison added curls for a fun look. She used Queen for a Day Thickening Spray by TIGI to hold the look. Allison's tip for other women with thin hair trying to get his style: "when you curl, use small sections and curl each piece in opposite directions for volume."

Ellen was very touched by the whole experience. "It was an amazing gesture, this whole experience has been something special."

Balayage is an advanced highlighting technique where your designer "paints" the highlights onto your hair. It is NOT traditional foil highlights that you might be accustomed to. Balayage gives your hair a natural "sunkissed" look and is an easy way to add dimension to all-over hair color.

Jodi highlighted Nikki's hair using the Balayage technique in the photos above. Notice that the difference is subtle, but just enough to make Nikki's hair stand out.

What is different about Balayage is that the color solution is "painted" on by your designer. This gives your stylist more control over how much of your hair receives the color. Why is this important? Because, if you weave a strand of hair and put it in a foil with the lightener, you are going to have the same amount of lightened hair throughout the strand.

This means if someone wants to have a lot of blonde color towards the ends, you are going to have a lot of blonde at the roots as well. If the hair ends are thinner you end up with lighter hair at your roots.

Balayage is also great because as it grows out, the roots are more subtle than with foil highlights - no more lines a few inches from your roots telling everyone that it has been a couple of months since your last color treatment!

Master designer Jodi Schuh was trained in this technique in Paris at Jacques Dessange years ago, and she has trained the rest of Michael's staff through our comprehensive continuing education program.

Ask your designer about Balayage highlights at your next appointment!

Hair designer, Alecia colored Stacy’s hair, using a double-process to achieve the two-toned look. Michael cut Stacy’s hair into a swingline bob using thinning shears. In cutting this type of bob, Michael stresses the importance of cutting the design line from short to long, starting in the center of the back of the head, and working around to the front. Also, when tapering the hair with thinning shears, you want to take the bulk out of the hair at the nape. The sides should be pinned out of the way because the hairline at the ear is shorter than the back, and there is less hair here.

To style this trendy do, Michael used a combination of elixir and gel. He then finger dried Stacy’s hair to lift hair away from the scalp. Once her hair was about 50% dry, he used a Denman brush to straighten hair at the roots brushing the hair from the roots from one side to the other. To complete the style, Michael used a round brush bending the hair into a full bob shape and used a finishing spray to hold the look.

I highlighted Nicole’s hair really heavy on top in the shape of an hour glass. For contrast, I used a rich dark chocolate color everywhere else. Nicole wanted a fun haircut that would be easy to style, so we decided on a really cute swingline bob with lots of choppy layers. The color and style look great on Nicole.

Emily had shoulder length, natural dirty blonde hair color and wanted something to spice it up. For color, I did pale blonde all over highlights to brighten up her face. I also added deep brown and purple contrast to add dimension. She needed a fun, funky contrast which gave attention to her face. For her haircut, I decided to take the length up to her hairline and stack it in the back to create body on top. I also took the layers up too, which also created lots of volume. To add texture, I razored the sides for a piecy look and thinned all over to create even more body and take bulk out. To finish her I used Sebastian mousse to give her style lift and fullness and texturized with Aquage Detailing Crème. To hold the style I used Bed Head Masterpiece hairspray. Emily loves her new look.

Designer Bess Gose creates a brillant style that moves. It's a short cut that's heavy on both funky layers and sexy fringe. To get the look, Bess cut model Shannon's locks wet while using a point-cutting method. After dry, more layers were added to enrich the hair's texture. Bess says she chose layers and a fringe to contour the face. To style after shampooing and conditioning, Bess used Aquage Uplifting Foam before blow-drying and teasing lightly with fingers. Aquage Working Spray was sprintzed throughout the hair and flat ironed into place. It's an awesome look.

Jeromy Burger of Kettering proposed to Jenna Ray in Michael’s Salon and Spa while she was getting her hair highlighted with designer Megan. Jeromy said he’s been carrying the engagement ring around for about two weeks and waiting for the right time to propose. “I just couldn’t wait any longer” stated Jeromy.  “We’ve been together for over four years and I thought, I’ll just ask her now.” A little stunned, Jenna answered back with a beautiful smile and said YES. Congratulations and best wishes to Jeromy and Jenna. Thanks for sharing your special moment with all of us at the salon.

This haircut on Brittney looks great on anyone, I recommend this cut to all body and face shapes.   I have had so many requests for the swingline bob.  The way it is cut and texturized gives maximum volume and is also very easy to style.   With the right products you can easily duplicate exactly what your designer did!  Book your appointment at Michaels now to get this great look!

Thanks,
