As we prepared for our quarterly photo shoot, our team discussed what works and what doesn't. The fashion magazines all display images of young, beautiful models with hair that is NOT wearable for the average woman. Could you imagine getting ready to drop your kids off at school, or heading to the office - but first taking hours and hours to style your hair like this?

This is a fantastic image, but it doesn't fit the lifestyles of most of our clientele. We want to inspire our guests to try new looks, but each person needs to be able to envision the look on him/herself.

For our May photo shoot, instead of having our designers or Michael select models, we asked our clientele. We sent out emails and asked for submissions on Facebook and Twitter:

Michael's is looking for real women over 40 to be a part of our upcoming makeover photo shoot. We're asking you to nominate yourself, or a woman you know who would be willing to make a major change.

We received more feedback from this online contest than any previous online contest. It was very difficult to select the winners, but we narrowed the field down to six. These brave women put their trust in Michael's talented staff to design their new look.

Before and After Photos:

Our designers went above and beyond just cut and color to empower each woman to discover the best version of herself. Click the names below to see more pictures and to learn about each makeover:

It's How To Tuesday again at Michael's! Do you have problems recreating your salon look at home? Michael's Salon is putting together a new how to video each week to teach you how to look fresh from the salon everyday.

This week is part 2 of Debbie's Jane Iredale makeup application. Last week she showed how to apply makeup for a classic day look. This week, she's showing you how you can quickly and easily dress up that look for a night out. She turns the basic eye makeup into a smokey eye and adds some shimmer to the look.

Debbie added Jane Iredale's Cream to Powder Eyeliner in Black Plus and used the Eyeliner/Brow brush to soften and smudge the look. She added some shimmer with the 24 Karat Gold Dust in Silver, and added some shine to Morgan's lips with Jane Iredale's PureGloss.

For more makeup tips, check out Jane Iredale's makeup blog and YouTube page. The great people at Jane have lots of videos and ideas on how to update your makeup look. And as always, let us know what you think of today's video! Leave a comment here, or on our Facebook or Twitter accounts. Also, let us know if you have any ideas for next week!

Emily had shoulder length, natural dirty blonde hair color and wanted something to spice it up. For color, I did pale blonde all over highlights to brighten up her face. I also added deep brown and purple contrast to add dimension. She needed a fun, funky contrast which gave attention to her face. For her haircut, I decided to take the length up to her hairline and stack it in the back to create body on top. I also took the layers up too, which also created lots of volume. To add texture, I razored the sides for a piecy look and thinned all over to create even more body and take bulk out. To finish her I used Sebastian mousse to give her style lift and fullness and texturized with Aquage Detailing Crème. To hold the style I used Bed Head Masterpiece hairspray. Emily loves her new look.

The Spring/Summer 2009 edition of "NEW BEAUTY" The World's Most Unique Beauty Magazine, features The New Face of 40 Anti-Aging Celebrity Secrets. This edition focuses on many of the beauty secrets celebrities use to maintain their youthful appearance. Using the right skincare products is a great place to start. And, Jane Iredale mineral makeup seems to be on top of the list.  Jane Iredale mineral makeup is not only popular with the stars; it is the number one choice of plastic surgeons and skin care professionals.

Marissa Hervey of Dayglo Med-Spa, LLC states “I incorporate Jane Iredale at the end of every single treatment I perform. No one leaves without minerals on their skin and a sample in their pocket.” When asked what product offers the most beauty benefits? Marissa said “I love all of the Jane Iredale products; however, the one I use the most is Amazing Base loose mineral foundation due to its versatility. I can use it after a relaxing facial or an intense chemical peel. Not only is the coverage remarkable, its minerals are anti-inflammatory, delivering terrific soothing and healing effects. It provides nearly immediate results for patients with acne, rosacea and pigmentation issues. It also helps post-surgery patients see and enjoy their results long before the bruising and redness go away.”

You don’t have to be a celebrity to enjoy the benefits of Jane Iredale mineral makeup. You can purchase the products right here in Dayton, Ohio at Michael’s Salon and Spa. When you visit the salon, be sure to ask Debbie for a free Jane Iredale makeover.

Here’s some great tips on getting the most out of your makeup. Makeup does expire, so we thought you would be interested in reading this MSN article.  Shares some good information on knowing how long to keep certain types of makeup and general safety tips.

You can read the full article on MSN.com Lifestyle section.

Keep an Eye on It

Never take chances with anything used close to your eyes, such as mascara or eyeliner; replace each item every three months.

 One-Year Plan

Products applied directly to your skin that have a liquid or cream consistency (foundation, concealer, cream eye shadow and blush, lipstick, moisturizer, eye cream) will last up to a year.

 Life Expectancy

Powders (face powder, blush, eye shadow), which contain fewer oils than their creamy counterparts, can be used 1 to 2 years.

 Warning Signs

Pay attention to moisture beading, color separating, a change in the original color, or a foul smell. These are all warning signs that the preservatives in the product may have broken down. Be especially vigilant about natural and organic products as they contain nontraditional preservatives, which can affect their shelf life.

 Just for You

Keep your makeup (especially anything you use near your eyes) to yourself. Don’t share your products — and your germs.

 Know When to Toss

Don’t add water or saliva (yuck!) to thin out the texture of a product that’s begun to clump. Throw it away and buy a replacement.

 Tools of the Trade

Avoid dipping your finger (and introducing bacteria) into open containers. Use applicators or disposable cotton swabs instead.

 Keep it Clean

Regularly cleanse brushes, tools, and sponges that can trap oil and bacteria. Wash with mild soap or baby shampoo semiweekly and toss sponges after several uses.

 Pump it Up

Take note of creams in open pots, which are less stable than those with an enclosed pump, which keeps them fresher longer.

 Play it Safe with Sunscreen

“The FDA requires sunscreens to remain stable and effective on the self for 3 years from the date of manufacture, and a year after the tube has been opened,” says Los Angeles dermatologist, Ronald Moy. If your sunscreen has expired, pitch it.
