This week's How-To Video includes Jodi from Michael's Salon & Spa's beauty team demonstrating how to create a fuller look with short hair. For those of our clients sporting a shorter 'do, it's always important to know how to achieve a flawless look in order to avoid flat and undefined hair.

What you will need:

• Michael's Designer Shaping Hair Spray
• Michael's Texture Taffy
• Velcro Rollers
• Blow Dryer
• Round Brush

Below is a step-by-step guide on learning the basics of styling short hair and achieving this salon inspired look.

Video: Hair How-To Video: Fullness in short hair

New in 2010 at Michael's Salon, we will feature How-To Tuesdays. Women in Dayton - heck women around the world - are frustrated when they can't reproduce their salon look at home. So to combat this problem, we will produce a weekly video starring one of our designers demonstrating how they style their OWN hair! Sure, it's easy to understand what your stylist is teaching you when you're in a chair in front of them and they have two free hands... but it gets a little more difficult when you're solo in front of the mirror.

Our first brave designer is Tonya Verhoff, who has been at Michael's for many years and is known for her cute and stylish short hair. In this video, Tonya will show you how she gets her short hair just right:

Ladies, don't be intimidated by the steps to achieve this look! If you pay attention to the clock behind her, you see that it took Tonya less than 20 minutes from wet to set.

To recap, here are some of Tonya's Tips:

• Tonya uses Styling Creme by Michael's when her hair is wet, applying from root to tip.
  
• When blow drying, begin by finger-drying your hair until it's 80% dry and then use a round brush to add body.
  
• If you use good products and a good flat-iron, you should only have to pass it through your hair once. More than once and you will burn and damage your hair.
• Tonya uses Beyond Shine by Aquage to protect her hair from heat damage.
  
• To finish her look, Tonya uses Michael's Shine It paste to give her hair flexible hold that's not too sticky.
  

Michael's Salon worked with the Media Group at Michael's to develop an intensive, hour-long training video to address the problem of choppy, uneven bobs that Michael noticed everywhere on the street. The bob is currently one of the most popular haircuts, and Michael saw a need to develop this revolutionary cutting technique. Continuing education for all designers is at every level is a large part of why Michael's is the premiere salon in the Dayton region. Michael has used this video to train his staff in small groups and has noticed a vast improvement in cuts leaving the salon. "There is no excuse for not achieving the client's desired look. You have to take into consideration the texture and type of hair, thickness, etc. in order to make this or any look work." In this training video, Michael explains how using the right products allows you to overcome difficult or hard to manage hair.

I highlighted Nicole’s hair really heavy on top in the shape of an hour glass. For contrast, I used a rich dark chocolate color everywhere else. Nicole wanted a fun haircut that would be easy to style, so we decided on a really cute swingline bob with lots of choppy layers. The color and style look great on Nicole.

Emily had shoulder length, natural dirty blonde hair color and wanted something to spice it up. For color, I did pale blonde all over highlights to brighten up her face. I also added deep brown and purple contrast to add dimension. She needed a fun, funky contrast which gave attention to her face. For her haircut, I decided to take the length up to her hairline and stack it in the back to create body on top. I also took the layers up too, which also created lots of volume. To add texture, I razored the sides for a piecy look and thinned all over to create even more body and take bulk out. To finish her I used Sebastian mousse to give her style lift and fullness and texturized with Aquage Detailing Crème. To hold the style I used Bed Head Masterpiece hairspray. Emily loves her new look.

Something different for summer.

Teresa is a working mom with three kids. She wanted an up-to-date look, but most importantly a style that would be easy. Most of my short hair clients get bored with the same old cut, they like change and I like change too. With Teresa's hair, I slightly under cut it giving closeness on the sides and back. This allows her to keep a little length on top for fullness and adds more drama to the style. Teresa's hair is fine, but this cut works great on thick hair too. It's a great style for summer. To style her new cut, I used Sebastian mouseforte and Aquage texturzing wax. These are both easy products to use and a neccessity for creating the look at home.
