There's nothing more frustrating than not being able to recreate your salon look at home, so we're going to do our best to show you some secret tips and techniques so you can have a salon look everyday!

Round Brush Blow Out

This week's video features Katie demonstrating how she round brushes her angled bob haircut to get lots of volume.

Video: How To: Round Brush Blow Out

To recap, here are some of Katie's tips:
  • Finger-dry your hair until it's 80% dry, and then start round brushing
  • Clip your hair out of the way to start round brushing your bottom layer and work your way up
  • Round brush one section at a time, and hit the cool button on your dryer to allow your hair to cool before removing your brush
  • Work in small sections for the best results
  • At your crown, brush your hair back at about halfway up your part - if you follow the part all the way back it will look flat.
  • Use a good hairspray to hold your look

It's How To Tuesday again at Michael's! Do you have problems recreating your salon look at home? Michael's Salon is putting together a new how to video each week to teach you how to style your hair at home. But here's the difference: our designers are demonstrating the styles on themselves!

This week we have a how-to and a demonstration. Kristen received a Keratin Complex Smoothing Therapy treatment one week prior to taping this how to. Before she got the Keratin treatment, we taped her going through the same process of blow-drying and flat-ironing her hair, so we can show you how much time she saves after getting the Keratin treatment. If you want to learn more about Keratin Complex Smoothing Therapy, visit the Coppola website, and check out our previous blogs about this revolutionary treatment.

So here is Kristen, to tell you more about the Keratin treatment, and to show you how to blow dry and flat iron medium length hair for a sleek, smooth style:

This video is longer than most of our how to videos, but that's because we didn't want anyone to say that we just cut out part of the blow dry or flat iron process. Normally we cut out parts of the video that repeat themselves to shorten the time. Kristen still had 5 more minutes of styling left in the 'before' video, and that time includes explaining the process and products! If you compare JUST the styling times (not talking in between), before the Keratin, it took her 14 minutes from wet to set. After Keratin, Kristen only needs 5.5 minutes to blow dry AND flat iron. As a mother of two working full time, Kristen needs all the extra time she can get in the morning!

Kristen washed her hair with Sebastian Volupt shampoo and conditioner. Combined with the Volupt spray, Sebastian says it adds 75% more volume to the hair. While her hair was still wet, she also used the Silkening Oil Treatment by Aquage -follow the links for more info on each product. Kristen protects her hair from the flat iron with Sebastian's Trilliant Shine Spray and Thermal Protectant.

We're back with the 2nd edition of How To Tuesdays at Michael's Salon! This video features our owner, Michael Schuh Jr., demonstrating round brush techniques. Obviously (once you see Michael you'll understand why I say obviously - he has no hair) he can't demonstrate this technique on himself. So he used model Rachel Novick to demonstrate how to straighten her curly hair.

To recap, here are Michael's tips:
  • Apply product when hair is wet, beginning at the roots and spreading down to the ends. Michael used Elixir and Swell Gel on Rachel.
  • Finger dry hair until it is about 80% dry. With Rachel's curly hair, he then smoothed her hair with a denman brush before round brushing.
  • When round brushing, hold the dryer at the nozzle so you can control the direction of the heat.
  • After you round brush a section, bend it to the side so the section keeps its shape and you can continue underneath.
This demonstration was part of a training video produced by Michael on how to cut a swingline bob. Rachel had a dramatic makeover that day - her hair was down to the middle of her back - and after Michael was done it was at her chin! Here are her before and after photos:
