With prom and wedding season upon us, we want to let you know about a new technique in updo hairstyles - Bespoke. A team of Michael's Stylists attended the Aquage Academy in South Beach, Florida where they were trained in this creative hairstyling technique. In this video, Lori explains the Bespoke technique while she demonstrates it on Abby's long hair.

About Bespoke Hairstyles

The word Bespoke was originally used by fine, British suit makers referring to the ultimate luxury of having clothing tailored to the client's specifications. This concept was introduced to the hair industry by Aquage educators, to create a tailor-made unique hairstyle - perfect for special occasions.

What makes Bespoke unique is that stylists use a special needle and thread to secure your hair in place. There are no bobby pins or rubber bands. This gives your style an elegant look, while eliminating the uncomfortable and sometimes long process of taking your hair down after your big event.

The photos of Jill and Rachel above are from Michael's Culture Shift 2011 Celebration, where the team who went to the Aquage Academy demonstrated the new techniques they learned.

A team of our designers are certified to offer this technique for your special event coming up - be sure to ask about Bespoke when scheduling your hair appointment!

How To Tuesday videos are back! Check Michael's Beauty Blog weekly for a new video featuring Michael's beauty team demonstrating the techniques they use everyday when getting ready in the morning. There's nothing more frustrating than not being able to re-create your salon look at home, so we're going to do our best to show you some secret tips and techniques so you can have a salon look everyday!

How To Style Long Hair in a Curly Updo

We have put together a couple of updo videos - check out Kinley's Short Hair Updo and Ali's Long Hair Updo - but here's another one for you! Our receptionist Klara learned how to do this hairstyle from our designers, and she always looks so cute and put together. Check out her curly updo:

Video: Hair How To: Long Hair Updo with Curls

To recap, here are the steps to achieve this look:
  • Start by using a texturizing product, like Michael's Styling Creme before you blow dry your hair - this will help give your hair some texture so your curls will hold
  • You will need a good supply of bobby pins to hold this style
  • Once your hair is dry, begin by teasing the front to add a bump, and then pin it back
  • Start by taking approximately 1 inch sections, and curl from the end to mid-shaft
  • Be sure to let the curl set on your curling iron before releasing
  • Twist the section back until the end of the curl remains, then pin it in the back
  • Klara recommends pinning the side pieces toward the top of your head, and pinning the pieces in the back lower so that you have a full look in the end
  • Continue curling, twisting and pinning your hair in 1 inch sections
  • If you have pieces that you left too long, you can re-curl, or put in another bobby pin to hold it in place
  • Don't forget to curl the hair that you pinned back; Klara doesn't twist these pieces, but flips them and then pins - these pieces will give your updo more fullness in the center
  • If your hair doesn't hold the curls well, use hairspray right after releasing the curling iron to help keep your curls
  • Be sure to finish the look with hairspray to hold your look
  • Accessorize your look with a flower or headband, or start with feather hair extensions for a fun look - they will curl just like your natural hair!
What do you think? Is this a look you will try? If you have any styling tips or beauty techniques you would like to see, please let us know! You can leave a comment here on our blog, or on Facebook or Twitter!

A group of Michael's designers went to America's Beauty Show in Chicago, and one of the biggest hair trends they said we HAD to bring back to Dayton was hair flairs. They're now in, and we are excited to offer two kinds of hair flairs at Michael's:

Feather Hair Extensions

These feather extensions are made with natural feathers, and are available in a variety of colors and lengths. The feathers are attached to your hair by a Michael's designer, and will last for weeks! The coolest part of these extensions is that they will last under your normal styling routine - you can wash, curl, blow-dry and flat iron the extensions just like you style your natural hair. Feathers are one of the hottest hair accessory trends - many celebrities have been spotted wearing feather extensions!

Hair Crystalz

The sparkly Hair Crystalz add glamour to any hairstyle. Hair Crystalz are made from genuine Czech crystals - not imitation rhinestones, and are available in a wide variety of colors. They attach to your hair with heat and will stay in place for the duration of your special event. The perfect hair accessory for proms, weddings and galas!

Both the feather extensions and Hair Crystalz are available for purchase with any styling service. The feathers are only $7 per piece, and the Crystalz are only $.60 per piece -- affordable options to add a little glamour to your style!

What do you think of this latest hair trend - is it something you would like to try?

At last - the long-awaited makeover photos of Shana, our Young Professional makeover winner!

Before and After: Shana's Young Professional Makeover

With the help of Generation Dayton, the dynamic networking group for Young Professionals in the Dayton region, Michael's sought out young professionals who would be willing to put their trust in the hands of our talented beauty professionals for a beauty makeover. We had a great response, but one nomination really stood out.

By day Shana Douglas is Marketing Director at Sunbelt of Miami Valley, by night, she is a social media extraordinaire, volunteering her time and expertise to such organizations as the March of Dimes, Dayton AMA, Greater Dayton Advertising Association, and more. She is very active and involved in the Dayton community and online (she's @ShanaDouglas if you're on Twitter).
"I nominate myself... solely because I don't have time to take care of myself like I'd like to! Between a full-time job, consulting and numerous volunteer roles, there's little time left for beauty."
Hairstyle Info:
Tonya worked with Shana to find a hairstyle that suits Shana's professional-by-day/"rowdy chucks and heels wearing diva by night" personality.

Professional Day Look         |        Sassy Night Style

First, Tonya chose to darken Shana's hair with a rich chocolate color to bring out her blue eyes and skin tone. Shana wanted some red highlights to add some fun to her look so Tonya added some chunky red highlights around her face. For the cut, Shana needed to be able to cover up a tattoo on the back of her neck, so Tonya went with a shag hairstyle with lots of face framing layers. Tonya tapered Shana's hair at the crown to add volume and lift. Paula used neutral brown colors for Shana's makeup to compliment her eyes.

To mix it up for a night look, Tonya pulled Shana's hair into a trendy side ponytail - a messy look with lots of pieces around her face. Courtney then amped up Shana's makeup by giving her a smoky eye.

If you want to see more photos of Shana's makeover, there are more on Michael's Facebook page. What do you think of Shana's new look? Are you ready to make a change?

Congratulations to the Kettering 2010 Holiday at Home Queen Morgan Sandstrom! Morgan is the daughter of Kevin and Debbie Sandstrom - Debbie happens to be a makeup artist and floor manager here at Michael's Salon! You may recognize Morgan from our Spray Tan information or makeup videos; she has graciously been a model for us on several occasions.

Miss Holiday at Home, Morgan Sandstrom

Alecia, one of Michael's talented designers, styled Morgan's beautiful long hair in loose waves for this trendy specialized style. If you paid attention to hair at the Emmy Awards, (link to photos from InStyle magazine) you definitely saw celebrities with styles similar to Morgan's.

The Holiday at Home festival will be held this coming Labor Day weekend on Sept 5-6 in Kettering, Ohio. The Holiday At Home celebration began on Labor Day, 1959. From this, Holiday At Home was refined and enlarged to the present Labor Day weekend festival that is now enjoyed by thousands of south suburban residents and visitors.

Congratulations to the entire Holiday at Home court, pictured below:

It's How To Tuesday again at Michael's! Do you have problems recreating your salon look at home? Michael's is putting together a new how to video each week to teach you how to style your hair at home. But here's the difference: our designers are demonstrating the styles on themselves!

This week Ali is demonstrating something that is usually very hard to do on yourself - a long hair updo. Once the steps are broken down, she shows that this style is actually pretty easy and quick!

One thing you need to keep this look in place is great hairspray. Ali used two different hairsprays by Aquage - the Freezing Spray to smooth and hold the look while styling, and the Finishing Spray to set it in place.

Do you have a beauty technique that you would like to see featured here? Coming up next week: flat iron curls with Elise!

This week Kinley is demonstrating a great style for the day between shampoos. Most people don't need to wash their hair everyday - by simply rinsing your hair every other day in lukewarm water you can extend the life of your color and keep your hair healthy.

Kinley used TIGI's Dirty Little Secret Dry Shampoo to give her second day hair life and shine. She secured her style with TIGI's Bedhead Masterpiece Shine Hairspray.
